MacDermid Alpha CircularSolderTM: Solder pastes made from recycled tin

To reduce the environmental impact of electronics manufacturing, MacDermid Alpha has launched two solder pastes that contain over 90% recycled tin.

MacDermid Alpha and Amitronic offer their customers a tin waste recycling service. The service allows the recycling of tin waste generated in electronics manufacturing, such as solder paste waste, tin dross, used or contaminated tin bath and other tin waste sources.

Recycled tin waste is reused to produce Alpha’s CircularSolderTM solder pastes.

Using recycled tin in solder paste serves the goals of sustainable development in many ways:

  • Reduces dependence on metal mining and the environmental impacts of mining.
  • Reduces CO2e emissions from solder paste production by up to 3.94 kg per kilo of solder paste.
  • Reduces energy consumption in tin production by up to 44% compared to mined tin.
  • Reduces ozone formation by 61% per kilo of tin produced.
  • Minimizes consumption of finite natural resources.
  • Supports human rights globally and is not dependent on tin from conflict zones.

MacDermid Alpha’s solder pastes, which are made from recycled tin, meet and exceed the purity requirements of IPC standard J-STD-001. MacDermid Alpha’s recycled tin solder pastes have the same level of performance as solder pastes made from mined tin.

CircularSolderTM solder pastes are available as CVP390V and OM340 solder pastes with SAC305 solder.

CVP390V R9 SAC305

Alpha’s CVP390V R9 is an excellent general purpose solder paste, which best features are its wide process windows in critical production steps, such as printing and reflow. This allows the manufacture of many different products with the same solder paste, bringing flexibility and efficiency to production and improving first pass yields.

CVP390V has excellent electrochemical reliability, which improves the reliability and service life of electronic assemblies and enables the design of very dense assemblies for use in demanding conditions. CVP390V R9 passes even the most demanding SIR tests with even 0.1mm test comb spacing (0.5mm standard).

In addition to these features, CVP390V R9 flux residues are easily pin-testable and CVP390V does not contain halogens, which are hazardous to the user and the environment.

OM340 R9 SAC305

OM340 R9 is a great solder paste for high volume production. The paste’s outstanding printing properties enable printing speeds of up to 150mm/s, enabling fast throughput in production.

Other good features of OM340 R9 solder paste include low Head-In-Pillow and Random/Mid Chip Solder Ball defect rates, cosmetically beautiful flux residues and a wide process windows for the manufacture of many kinds of products.

OM340 R9 flux residues are also easily tested and OM340 does not contain halogens that are dangerous to the user and the environment.
